Quareni

The Quareni are an aquatic race native to De'Ru.

Description:  The Quareni are air-breathing mammals whose evolutionary path has taken them to the sea.  They walk upright on two webbed plantigrade feet, standing between 6 and 7 feet tall.  Their proportions, for the most part, are similar to those of a human, though the torso is a bit longer and the legs a bit shorter.  The arms are muscular and functional, possessing webbed three-fingered hands, tipped with small claws.  The neck is long, topped by a wedge-shaped head.  No ears are present save for the small holes behind the eyes.  They are capable of echolocation, the ears being useful primarily out of the water.  The nostrils can close to keep out water while the Quareni is submerged, able to stay under for a half hour at a time.
The third pair of limbs has evolved into a sort of underwater wing, used for propulsion.  The finned tail works as a rudder.
The skin is thick and rubbery, similar to that of a dolphin or other earth cetacean, and ranges in color from pale gray to nearly black, generally with a bluish or greenish hue.  Quareni from different regions may have slight patterns upon their hides.
They wear no clothing, having been unable to find anything that fits their strange physique, and believing it unnecessary anyway, as all of their important bits are internal, hidden within a slit between their legs, in both genders.  It is difficult to tell male from female within this race, unless the female is nursing, in which case, the mammaries beneath and in front of her arms are slightly engorged (nothing like a human breast).

Skills and Abilities:   The Quareni are, of course, excellent swimmers, this being their primary skill.  Flat out in open water, they can reach speeds of 30 miles an hour.  Like dolphins, they are often found enjoying themselves by riding the bow-wave of ships.
Quareni are intelligent, quick learners with vast, impressive memories, able to recall with precise detail stories they were told or sights they encountered from a very young age.  Their memory, in fact, is legendary amongst the other races.  It is difficult to keep such things as books or paper beneath the waves, and so everything must be recalled by memory.
They possess a form of echolocation, similar to that used by dolphins.  It is primarily used underwater, being nowhere near as functional on land.  Their eyesight is excellent, able to pick out moving forms in dark, murky water, as well as on land.

Ecology:  Quareni have been an amphibious race for thousands of years, evolved from creatures that lived along the shores, fishing the waters and returning to land to rest.
They are omnivorous, catching fish as well as eating the lush plants and abundant shellfish found in their waters.
Quareni are monogomous, taking one mate for the duration of their lives, which can be up to 130 years.  They are sexually mature at around 15, generally not taking a mate until several years after that.  Most only have two or three children throughout their lives, only giving birth to one per pregnancy.  Gestation is 9 months.

Society:  Quareni live in vast underwater cities which have been meticulously emptied of water to create air-filled rooms, buildings, and even broad courtyards.  Despite all of this, their structures tend to be simple, usually a converted cave system, as it is somewhat difficult to build underwater.
On the whole they are rather carefree and fun-loving, full of life and vigor, without much use for strict rules and ridged governments.  Their cities are governed by a ruling family and their guards, positions that are mostly just for show and tradition.

Religion:  The religion of the Quareni is a very loose one, based primarily around the worship of Fitias with Dauneth and Inadhea being lesser gods.

Special Notes:  The Quareni have learned how to communicate with the dolphins the Terrans brought with them from Earth, and they seem to enjoy eachother's company quite a bit, quite often found together.  Being almost completely aquatic, the Quareni don't have much direct relation with many other races, though there are some present in Deronar, and even some working and living in the river below the falls.
Magic is commonplace in Quareni society, just another fact of life, like the tides and the currents.
